3rd-Degree Black Belt
Sensei Kelly Cunningham brings over 13 years of dedicated martial arts experience to the mat. A lifelong practitioner and educator, Kelly holds first-, second-, and third-degree black belts, having spent over a decade training and instructing at the prestigious Karate Institute of Mentor. Her expertise is rooted in a diverse curriculum that bridges traditional technique with modern application.
A Philosophy of Empowerment
With a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and a career spanning roles as a classroom teacher, Dean of Students, and School Director, Kelly views the dojo as more than just a place to practice "kicks and punches." She is a firm believer in the Therapeutic Martial Arts model, which utilizes the discipline of the arts to foster physical, mental, and emotional growth.
Kelly’s teaching philosophy focuses on:
-
Self-Regulation: Helping students harness focus and discipline to navigate life’s challenges.
-
Leadership: Empowering practitioners to lead with humility, courtesy, and perseverance.
-
Interdisciplinary Growth: Connecting the physical patterns of martial arts to cognitive development and academic success.
Impact & Leadership
In 2021, Kelly was instrumental in reestablishing the signature Therapeutic Martial Arts program at Summit Academy Community School – Painesville. Under her guidance, the program has become a cornerstone of student development, focusing on the Kwanmukan style—a powerful blend of Korean Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Shotokan Karate, and Jiu-Jitsu.
Whether she is leading a promotion ceremony or coaching a student through their first kata, Sensei Cunningham is dedicated to helping every individual reach their full potential. She believes that the true victory in martial arts isn't found in the belt around your waist, but in the character, respect, and integrity you carry into the world.
